Producing Shea butter is not an easy process. Shea nut trees, also known as the Vitellaria, This tree does not immediately produce nuts, it can take a period of about 10-15 years before it starts bearing fruit. Research has shown that the Shea tree can produce fruit for up to 200 years, making them more likely for long lasting production.
Each tree can produce as much as 45 kilograms of fruit every year, and each piece of fruit can contain as much as 400 grams of dry shea nut seeds that are used to produce shea butter.
Shea butter production has been immensely important for the women in West and East African countries as it has been a versatile and highly valued natural ingredient that is used today for many skincare and hair care products due to its unique moisturizing and nourishment properties.
Harvesting of Shea nuts is more than just a job for these women, It is more like art and pride for them. The harvesting process and production is all hands on deck for the women. They truly take pride in their work ethic as a community.
